Visual diary 2007

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping—rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”

For you

This book is a visual diary.

The photographs were taken during the spring of 2007, after my liver transplant at the Carlos Haya Regional University Hospital in Málaga. During the period of partial immobility while I was recovering, I made television the favourite subject of my creative efforts.

With a digital camera, I took photograph after photograph of the flow of images passing through the screen and into our minds. One medium, my camera, captures the image of another, the television, which in turn captures the image of another, which captures the image of another, and so on.

The intention is that the image, transported in this way and arrested in its movement, acquires an appearance and a presence of its own, while at the same time forming part of our collective subconscious.

The images are blurred partly because of the technique itself, and partly because what interests me is the sensation conveyed by the image — the memory itself.

This sequence of sensual and suggestive images can be seen as a succession of frames in the tradition of the comic strip.
